Ms.Daggubati Purandeswari, Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development, delivered the Twelfth Myles Horton and Paulo Freire Memorial Lecture on ‘Sakshar Bharat: New Initiative for Knowledge Society in India’ on April 7, 2010 at A.N. Sinha Institute of Social Studies, Patna. Delivering the Myles Horton and Paule Friere Lecture she said, ‘ Sakshar Bharat extends the scope of the literacy to include basic literacy and equip all people with vocational skill’. This will widen the coverage of the literacy campaign and take care of the large uncovered sections of the population including women. Sakshar Bharat programme would lead to emergence of a population particularly in rural areas, who are both enabled and empowered to make the overall development process participatory. She pointed out that the programme would need the same professionalism that is found in the formal sector of education. She also said that total quality management has been embedded in the programme and it would draw its strength from top most research institutes and management institutions across the country.
The lecture was attended by state level representatives, literacy activists, media representatives and the intelligentsia.
This was followed by the annual award ceremony ‘Akshar Bihar’ for literacy activists from Bihar.
