Details: Humans are dependent upon the services provided by ecosystems. In order to continue to obtain ecosystem services, the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems need to be protected and restored wherever possible. Therefore on the occasion of World Ozone Day, to be held on 16 th September 2021, with the theme being Keeping us, our food and vaccines cool (towards slowing climate change and helping to boost energy efficiency in the cooling sector) the Centre for Environment, Energy and Climate Change (CEECC) of Asian Development research Institute (CEECC, ADRI), in collaboration with Patna Women’s College is organizing a special lecture on Restoring Urban Ecosystems: A sustainable approach to mitigate the effects of ground level ozone. The Centre aims to capture the social and ecological ways to slow down the ozone depletion process as well as cut off ground level ozone by giving ways to the diversity of local species, each acting upon to control the negative consequences.

Patna, September 16. To bring attention towards a very pressing issue of ground-level ozone, on the occasion of World Ozone Day, 2021 a special lecture – Restoring Urban Ecosystem: a sustainable approach to mitigate the impacts of ground-level ozone was jointly organized by the Centre for Environment Energy and Climate Change at the Asian Development Research Institute (an ENVIS Resource Partner of Government of India), and Patna Women’s College. The lectures were delivered by Dr. Umashankar Singh, a retired member of Indian Forest Services from Uttar Pradesh cadre and Mr. Madhukar Swayambhu, Vice-President, Community Friendly Movement (CFM) New Delhi.

Dr. Singh enlightened the audience on the contemporary issues of ground-level ozone and role of forest ecosystem for sustainable environment in the urban settings. He highlighted the concern around melting glaciers in Himalayan region, declining forest cover, deteriorating flora-fauna around the Indian-subcontinent.

Thereafter, Mr. Swayambhu pointed out the importance of restoring the urban ecosystem such as earth, water, and green cover to mitigate the adverse impact of climate change and ozone. He highlighted the significance of restoring natural ecology as key to the urban sustainability and resurrection of native ecology in wetlands and waterbodies as a landmark steps towards its restoration.

Professor Prabhat P Ghosh from ADRI delivered the welcome address. He brought the attention towards the global commitment in Montreal Protocol of 1987 to fight against adverse effect of global warming caused by ozone layer depletion. He appreciated the collective actions by different stakeholders, particularly the governments of countries to the fight against climate change by restricting an estimated 135 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions from the atmosphere and phasing out of 99 per cent of ozone depleting chemicals coming from sources like refrigerators, air-conditioners and many other products.

The programme was graced by Dr. Sister Maria Rashmi A.C and Dr. Shahla Yasmin from Patna Women’s College, and Deputy Director Mr. Vivek Tejaswi along with Debarupa Ghosh, Vishal Ahire from CEECC, ADRI.
